Ethiopia continues to advance on the path of a major political, economic, and social transformation. In the age of knowledge societies, it also needs to modernize and develop its national higher education system. In order for this process to be effective, it must build on the country's traditions, and address specific needs and local defining characteristics. At the same time, the modernization and development process can be supported by making use of positive experiences from other countries, and also by avoiding some of the mistakes that have been made elsewhere during similar transition periods.
